  1. After a bereavement, we were lucky enough to adopt a lovely new friend for our remaining piggy.

Helen was fantastic; so knowledgeable and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Pippin has settled in really well and helped us to get over our sad loss.

    Thanks Helen!

  3. a great big thank you for what you are doing for these wonderful little animals, i dont own any piggies now, i still miss mine even after years, strange how such little animals can have an effect on a fully grown male whos in his 60s, i know how at times things can get difficult in looking after guinea pigs, i wish you all the luck in the world, you deserve it, id like to help out somehow, but sadly as things are now its more or less impossible, ive a job to look after myself, but rest assured if i can spare anything i will donate the lot to you ..no matter what it is..best wishes...

  6. Helen @ gprc is fantastic with the g.pigs. Watching the rescue pigs respond to Helens expertise and empathy was lovely. Bonding Flower and Poppy with Sunny my male was made much easier under Helens care. All has gone well and Sunny Flower and Poppy are a happy trio.Sunny lost his mate 3 months ago and seeing him happy again means everything. Getting a rescued pig is very rewarding and the potteries guinea pig rescue centre is the place to go to. Thank you Helen for all you do for the animals and thank you for all you did for us.

  8. Just a quick note to say thank you for helping us out in our (and Penny's) time of need. Both Penny and Wilf are getting on although Penny is behaving like a cantankerous old lady which is exactly what she is. Wilf seems happy but still very shy of human contact and we are working on that. Penny was very territorial when we got them home but the new cage seems to have mellowed her out a bit even though Wilf is finding out she is not the pushover she might look like!

Thank you for all the advice and your help with finding a forever friend so quickly. We would recommend you to anyone in the same position as we were with a pining piggy!

  10. Dear The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue,
Thank you for making this website, I love reading your latest news and seeing lots of sweet but sad stories about guinea pigs. I'd like to say that Luge my lovely rescued boar has happily settled in with the beautiful sow... Storm! :) -- And the squeaky Luna. They are very naughty piggies that get a lot of attention and love. I'd just like to thank Ian and Andrea for their kindness towards all our babies we've had so far. from Molly Aged 11.... :) Thanks

  11. I just found your website and it's lovely to see pictures of happy and healthy piggies. The information you give is really useful too so thank you. I have recently adopted two brother piggies from a rescue centre near where I live in Torbay, Devon. My boys, Rory and Dexter had been left in a cardboard box near communal rubbish bins and were thankfully discovered and taken to the rescue centre. Quite how anyone could put any animal out with the rubbish is beyond me. I'm so happy to have my boys who are the most gentle, good natured and cuddly pigs I could ever imagine. Although I had a guinea pig when I was a child and having looked after many through my years of study and working with animals, I love to research and investigate as much as I can to give my piggies the best life possible. Thanks for all the care you give to so many piglets in need and for educating people in how to care for them.

We've 2 indoor guinea pigs, Luis Suarez and Benjamin. We bought them from Pets at Home 😩 and as previous guests have said, not given a lot of info. I've been googling lots! Just want to say how fab this site is, thank you for all the info.
I'm a Kidsgrove gal myself, now just up the road in Sandbach, if I can help in anyway please just shout.

  13. Thank You so much for making this site. I have 2 babies,Meekee and Apple a mother and daughter set. Up until about 2 weeks ago all has been pretty steady in cavyville. They eat romaine kale squashes, berries , just about tried everything with the exceptions of garlic, onions and a few other harmful veggies and plants ,these guys have a better diet than an Olympic athlete, there home is cleaned twice a week new bedding, wipe down ect,However, about 2 1/2 weeks ago Meekee started scratching ,my first thought was fleas from our dogs.. they rarely go into my daughters room and it's all tiled so I did a total clean in there and lined the baseboards with boric, (the guineas are never on the bare floor). It just got worse and worse,to thw point she just about itched herself raw in a few spots.I believe now it was mites. I went to a natural foods store and found a product called Neem oil, smelled awful but it has anesthetic properties and kills mites I mixed 6drops to a cup of mineral oil, coated both Meekee and Apple with it,they hated it by the way, but it seemed to work, Meekee has a few places she scratched pretty bad,and bandages or taping her paw is NOT an option for this little stubborn one, I was looking for ANY Information on pain control, shes doing better but every time she starts hopping about or itches her self she'll hit one of those raw spots and just cries I'm going out now to get some ibuprofen it's all I can do, no vets around here care for cavys, and I don't have the funds for emergency care

  14. Thank you so much for posting this advice. We live in Hull, East Yorkshire and as you have stated in the info given, we were given very poor info about what our new baby brothers (I think they may well be about 12 weeks by now) needed. They have come to us from Pets At Home with what we now know to be the onset of ringworm, needing lots of care and attention! I found your info on boar behaviour very helpful - we had been wondering why the boys seem to be constantly rumbling, tugging food off each other, and running and jumping around the cage, trying to mount each other, too! Going to remove a few items (e.g shelters) and make sure we have a couple of bowls / water bottles to help them while they settle in. We have had the boys only a week and it's been quite dramatic!

  16. I am from Surrey and rescued two wonderful little girls from a lady who was breeding them. Sadly one of them died at age five after three wonderful years of her being in my life, she hid her illness from me and only gave me a day to know that something was terribly wrong with her, despite all of the good food, warmth and love lavished on her. I am now left with just one who is now just getting used to having the place to herself and would not feel it appropriate to introduce to another friend because of her love for dominance and space. I had never owned Guinea pigs before this, and unlikely to ever adopt again, but most definitely be donating to wonderful charities like yours, I stumbled across this site by accident, yet was amazed at the wonderful pictures of all the rescued piggies that are now living happier and healthier lives. Thankyou for sharing them with us all and I will soon be making regular donations to the Potteries sanctuary.

The only problem is my husbands moaning because he's had to move gravel and lay turf to make a new play area especially for our new additions plus I'm not getting no house work done because I can't stop watching them . Never owned piggies before but I'm hooked !! X

  22. Just a quick note to say a big thank you to Helen and the team.
After sadly losing one of a pair of piggys, we decided to look for a friend for our remaining little girl who was really missing her sister and that’s when I came across potteries guinea pig rescue on the internet.
We took our little molly over to meet some of her rescue residents and following Helens advice she was matched up with a lovely little boy, Charlie. It’s been nearly a week now since they were paired together and they are already the best of friends. It’s so nice them both happy, talking and squeaking together. So thanks again Helen without your care, help and advice we would still have a sad little piggy on her own.

  24. Having adopted from The Potteries before, I knew that when we lost our two girls (Rosie and Esme) within a matter of weeks leaving us with a pair of sad, grumpy girls that I would have to go back. So that I did and we came home with neutered boy Edward, it has taken a little while for them to bond completely but they are now fab together and make a lovely little trio.
Helen, as always was brilliant and full of help and advice, and I know if I ever have a piggy related problem I only have to ask :)
    Thank you Helen.

Sparkles sadly passed away on Saturday very unexpectedly. His companion Holly was very stressed and sad, no amount of cuddles could help him feel better at this time. Grieving our selves for our beautiful boar we knew that Holly needed a friend ASAP. I contacted Helen with the hope she would have a friend for Holly available. You did and we now have 'Snowball' :-)
Holly and Snowball are now happy and best of friends. Snowball is in his forever home.
Thank you Helen, you're doing a fantastic job we cant thank you enough

  26. We came across the Potteries Guinea pig rescue when looking for guinea pigs for our three children. Luckily for us there were three beautiful sows waiting for a forever home. Our children continue to love their pets and often ask if they can see what other guinea pigs are at the rescue. They spotted Ted, a handsome neutered boar and he came to live with us last week. He has settled in well with his three female companions!

  29. We were devastated when our piggie Winnie passed away, leaving her best friend Rosie and my husband and I grieving. We knew we needed to find Rosie a friend ASAP. So we visited a well known chain pets shop (mentioning no names, but their logo is green!) who said you probably can't pair guinea pigs once they are a certain age, and if we did buy a guinea from them we could not return them if it didn't workout. Well we were really disappointed and worried for Rosie! Anyway my husband and I googled for ideas and found Potteries and their matchmaking service.! Thank god we did!!! Helen was amazing! She has found our Rosie the perfect match in a gorgeous piggie called Piglet (neutered boar). They are truly smitten :) No piggie should live alone unnessarily and we are over the moon with our happy piggies. Thank you Helen and the team at Potteries x x

  30. After sadly losing 3 sows (one in January and two in May) I was left with one sow and one neutered boar, Eliza was used to living within a group and Helen was only too happy for me to piggy date Eliza and Enoch with a pair of sows she had in at the time.
The experience was very laid back and Helen was so welcoming. The bonding went well and Charlotte (renamed Emma) and Rosie (renamed Erika) came home to live with us. I now have a happy group of guinea pigs again. Eliza isn't as sad and Enoch is in his element.
Thank you Helen and keep up the good work xx

I was very impressed with your website and rang to ask advice and to see if you would have a suitable sow that we could adopt.
Helen was so helpful and understanding. I had lots of worries over introducing a new friend to Twink but Helen gave lots of advice and reassurance. We collected our new sow today, six week old Rowan. Helen oversaw the whole introduction for us. It was amazing, Twink and Rowan were lovely together. We bought them home and we have had no problems. Helen reassured us that she is available if we need further help with our adoption. A lovely lady offering a wonderful service and totally commmited to improving the life of guinea pigs. Would recommend you to anyone.

With great sadness we had to rehome our piggies due to personal reasons, and Helen quickly came to our rescue and offered to take them in and find them a perfect new forever home. We met up with her and her daughter to transfer the girls into her care. It was upsetting but i knew they would be so well looked after and would soon find a great new home to call their own.

We get updates of how they are doing, and it has made the world of difference knowing they are safe and will have a secure future thanks to The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue.

Many thanks and kind regards, Kelly + family x

  50. Hi Helen,

I just wanted to post a big thank-you for all of your help and support over the last couple of months!

Just a quick recap of the story:

My boar Charlie had become very quiet and withdrawn after his cage mate Harry passed. I wasn't aware I could bond a male guinea pig with any other than their siblings. That was until I stumbled accross the rescue. Charlie now lives happily with little 'Teddy' George :)

During the process of boar dating I had stumbled accross a gorgeous pair that I instantly fell in love with! (Jack and Bailey) but as boars rarely work in a trio, they were not an option :( weeks later I could still not stop thinking about them and contacted the rescue. They now live happily with me :D

This has been an amazing past couple of months and the boys are so happy! :) Thank-you again for everything! :)

Love from Kym, Charlie, George, Jack and Bailey x

  51. Dear Helen & Claire, just to say a big thank you for all your help ever since we discovered one of our 3 'female' guinea pigs was pregnant!! You advised us during the pregnancy about care of Molly, our expectant mum & on separating our now fighting males! A great help to have experts at the end of the phone! When our litter of 5 gorgeous pigs arrived before Christmas you gave more advice and sexed them for us, enabling us to rehome one of our adult boars with a baby boar. Keep a young sow with Molly and and castrated dad! And then you took our last 3 baby boars for 'boar dating'. You really have been too kind!

  89. Great site Helen.

I'm delighted to see the work you do. I have had guinea pigs for many years and your rescue centre and work is much needed.

I will keep an eye on GPs to adopt at some point.
